About this title: Prince Horace may be the successor to the throne, but the people of his kingdom have dubbed the spoiled monarch "Prince Brat." Chief among the prince's detractors is Jemmy, his whipping boy, who gets a beating whenever the future king misbehaves. When Prince Brat runs away from home, Jemmy accompanies him, plotting to abandon the prince at the first opportunity. However, before Jemmy can escape, both boys are kidnapped by a pair of highwaymen who think they can get a huge ransom for the prince. But the confused kidnappers become convinced that Jemmy is the prince, and that the prince is a ...

"This one was laid on me by my girlfriend, who is doing some reading tutoring. This is indeed a morality tale for young readers regarding entitlement, punishment, redemption and friendship, all wrapped in an adventure with unsavory characters, a dancing bear, potatoes, rats and, of course, a King. I leave you to connect them all. Oh yes, there are discussion questions for a literary book club, too. Please to enjoy."
"Oh, to be a prince! To do any sort of mischief and to have a whipping boy to bear the burden of one's punishment...to have servants dress one, to feed one, to clean up after one...What a life!
But, perhaps, the life of a young prince is not the idyllic life others might imagine. For what does the prince, Prince Brat, as he is called by his people, want but to run away from his life. And away he runs, following his whipping boy, Jemmy, into a series of adventures involving cutthroats, kidnapping and ransom, a dancing bear, a hot-potato man, a rat catcher, and a chase down into the sewers."
"My kids' interest fizzled out partway through this book-probably because we were reading it during adult swim. When the whistle was blown, they detached immediately and left me to read on alone. I could have waited, I suppose, but I was enjoying the book and decided to finish it off alone. I liked it. It was slightly challenging to read aloud but I muddled through (maybe that's the real reason they lost interest).
"In this hilariously witty book, Prince Horace, also known as Prince Brat, heir to a royal kingdom, lives up to his nickname-he is a complete brat! The troublesome child must often be chastised for misbehaving, but, because of king's order, he cannot be spanked. Therefore, his father keeps a whipping boy, Jemmy, an orphaned boy and ex-rat catcher, who is flogged every time the price needs a good whipping. Jemmy's deepest desires are to run away and rid himself of Prince Brat, but unfortunately for him, the prince beats him to it and runs away-with Jemmy in tow. While wandering the woods, they are captured by two vicious outlaws, one of whom is the very feared Hold-Your-Nose Billy. Trapped, the duo must learn to put aside their animosity and team up to make an escape.
Initially, I was surprised to see the Newberry Award stamp on the cover of the book, with the reason being that it didn't look incredibly entertaining at first glance. After getting into the book, however, I came to see that the book really was a page-turner. It's broken up into short chapters so the plotline moves quickly. Moreover, the jokes are aplenty and there are tons of fun twists. The book ultimately teaches valuable lessons on appreciating those who are different, on friendship, and on trust.
In fact, although common medieval expressions used in the book may make it difficult for some readers, the shorter length and the funny, fast paced plot is likely to keep most students hooked. Teachers could also use this book in conjunction with Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper to make great text-to-text connections in class. The Whipping Boy can also serve as a great interdisciplinary text to discuss medieval times."
