"Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is a great book. I've read it along time ago with my sister. She used to read me the boook when i was younger but I never used to understand everything she used to read. And I have decided to read it again because it reminded me of old times and i actually wanted to understand the poems. When I read the book it makes me happy. It is written in poetry with pictures to go along with it. There are many different poems and there are a lot thats what i like about it. For example "Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too" is my favorite poem out of the whole book. It is about these three brothers that went on a trip on a flying shoe and nrver came back. The reason I enjoy it so much is because it rhymes and i like to say it really fast as if it were a song. This book is preferbly for children. For children that know how to read and understand poems. I strongly believe that "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a good book for teenagers to read especially if they are lookin for a little giggle time. Many of the poems are true to life and some of them have to do more with imagination as opposed to thinking in reality. In my opinion its a book that lets you escape. It really funny and enjoyable. The drawings are drew with a simple pen and ink that has the best imagery it lets you understand the poem even better. The best thing about this books is that it really doesnt matter how old you are because everyone will enjoy it and it also makes really good points about life. As soon as you read this book it grabs your attention amd makes you want to read it more nonstop. I would rate this book a ten out of 10. The reason is because it takes you back to when you were younger or it just puts a smile on your face. Shel Silverstein was a renowned poet, playwright, illustrator, screenwriter, and songwriter. Best known for his popular children's books like The Giving Tree, Falling Up, and A Light in the Attic, Silverstein has brought joy to many readers around the world, he has become one of the most popular and best-loved children's authors of all time. It is really a good book."
There is a place where the sidewalk ends And before the street begins, And there the grass grows soft and white, And there the sun burns crimson bright, And there the moon-bird rests from his flight To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go, For the children, they mark, and the children, they know The place where the sidewalk ends....
"I got into the Shel Silverstein craze after reading The Missing Piece Meets the Big O online. Good stuff. Fun books, some of them with good messages.
This particular book of his is a collection of poems, some with accompanying illustrations (he does both) that are "at once outrageously funny and profound." Some are just so weird, you have to laugh, or at least make a funny face because you have no idea what you just read. Some of them have messages embedded within (for example, why you shouldn't eat the whole world, or why you should take the trash out before you get buried underneath and die). Some are morbid - tell me why I enjoyed those?
A fun book, not just for little kids, but for grown-ups as well. Especially if you're still a kid at heart.
"INVITATION
If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer... If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire For we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!""
