"I read this one for my 7th grade class. It is actually the third or fourth time I've read it for one reason or another, and I cry every time I get to Kahu diving for the stone. This book is a true pleasure. Entirely accessible, culturally rich, a heartwarming social commentary, and enough magic to please most readers. Definitely worth sitting down for a little while and giving a chance. Maybe it's not for everyone, but, in my opinion, it is quite the epic little story. (Also, I see a good deal of people here prefer the film version of this story. I have also seen the film, but after reading the book. I wonder if, in this case, the two versions are each equally powerful, but we might tend to prefer the form in which we were first exposed to the story?)"
"Rarely will I say it, but the movie is amazing and so much better than the book. My mother is from New Zealand and so the characters, trials, and songs in the movie were incredibly developed. The book is a good read, but the movie was spectacular."
I enjoyed the story of this book a lot. I really really wish it had been written to tell more about the girl. From her point of view, or from a narrator point of view telling her story. Having it from the view of the uncle was interesting, but took away some of my interest from the girl and her fascinating story.
I have heard that the movie is more about the girl, so I look forward to seeing that!"
"This book was very fascinating. I really liked it. Not only was the story good, but it gave a lot of insight into Maori culture. I think it would be interesting/appropriate for younger readers too, which I am always looking for for my kids. There is one minor swear word in it....."
