"As I was reading this book I frequently stopped and reread sentences, paragraphs, entire chapters. Maybe it was just to foster my growth as a Buddhist, but it led to an easy understanding of a well laid out book that traces the history of Buddhism and the elements of it's form in Zen Buddhism. The history is thick but easy to follow if you're careful and willing to take your time. And it lays an excellent foundation for understanding. And it's so worth it."
"Alan Watts was one of my favorite authors in my first year or two of college. I decided to pick this up again to see how it aged...and it definitely holds up. Although the ideas are no longer fresh to me, I was overjoyed to rediscover Alan Watts' conversational writing style. I was also able to identify with some of his processes of thought in a way I did not previously, indicating just how much of an influence Watts has had on my coming into adulthood. Good stuff if you like philosophy."
"almost 5 stars. watts successfully bridges over so called western and eastern philosophical traditions. Provocative and thrilling. if we get out from the frame of buddhism or preconceived idea about zen, this text will open up a new dimention that will liberate us from the legacy of modernity and enlightenment project: never in the form of spiritualism/new agy vs modernity, but beyond such dualism."
