"Well... who knew that the life of rabbits could be so engrossing?!
This book was a joy to read. The author used beautiful imagery to the point where I could imagine every little detail of the scenery and surroundings. He definitely has a way with words and I loved how he interspersed the writing with 'Lapine' (rabbit-talk) to make it that bit more believable. His writing made me want to keep reading and I would have happily read another 500 pages. I was sad when the story ended.
I loved the characterisation in the book. I guess that in a story about a bunch of rabbits, it could be easy to mistake one for the other. Not in this book. Each of the main rabbits has a distinct character, and throughout the book I found that I actually really cared about them. I can't really say much more about the characters without giving the storyline away, but suffice to say that it was a rollercoaster of emotions.
The story carries deeper meaning than just a story about rabbits. It's a tale of survival, team-work, friendship and perseverance. I think that this message is a valid one for adults and children alike, and that at some point EVERYONE should read this book. I can't believe that I didn't read it in my childhood."
"I read this book a couple years ago & loved it. It's an adventure story about a group of rabbits, but the twist is it's written from the rabbits' point of view. No "message" that I could detect- no ecology or right wing or left wing anything, just a great story. I got it for my 10 year old granddaughter, wasn't sure if she was old enough for a book not written for children, but she loved it. A great first adult book for a young person."
"I read this the first time when I was in my teens. I am now in my fifties and still loved it the second time around. I hope there will be a 3rd time in my future."
"I remember when I was a little girl, my mom told me how much she loved this book. She even bought my brother and me a videotape of the animated version, to introduce me to the characters. (The movie's great...but I would *not* recommend it for little kids...) I bought Watership Down at Powell's when I was eleven. I proudly paid for it with my allowance, and proceeded to read the whole book in a matter of days. On first reading, a few of the more existential allusions in Adams's work were lost on me. But seriously...I loved this book. I wanted to have a pet rabbit and name him Hazel (he was my favorite.) I did eventually write a story (for an after-school project) set in Blackavar (the name of one of the minor rabbits.) I read it again in ninth grade, and went back to it a few times. It's an amazing story of kinship and exodus. Fiver's apocalyptic visions only get spookier the more I read them. I don't know what the man's inspiration was for writing Watership Down, but I'm glad he did. And (strangely enough) this is a great educational text on rabbits! For people who love the mythological epic that is Watership Down (a story about rabbits which echoes Campbell's "Hero With a Thousand Faces") I recommend "The Book of the Dun Cow." Animals make any legend much more awesome. :-) I don't know where my old copy is. Honestly, I may have sold it back to Powell's when I moved out of my parents' house and went to college. But I look forward to buying a nice edition someday, and re-reading it again."
