About this title: The bestselling author of such classics as A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Certain Women reflects on art and faith with the fierce intelligence and imaginative daring that have made her one of our most cherished authors. The task of the artist, as she sees it, involves listening, keeping oneself fully aware, and then responding to creation with one's own art.

"L'Engle is a true artist in every sense. Thoughtful and thought provoking. I highly recommend this to any Christian artist, or anyone wondering what it means to reflect God in art, whether it be labeled "secular" or "Christian". To truly grasp it all, it requires more than one reading."
"The pleasure of this book is not just L'Engle's style, which is warm and inviting. The ideas here are big. In the past, creativity may have been easily dismissed, or thought of as something I do when I have time. This book challenges me and this notion. This book, along with "Imagine: A Vision for Christians in the Arts", answers many of the questions and struggles that I have had as an 'artist' who became a Christian.
This book is *double bonus awesome* if, besides being a writer, you are a woman or in theater. She knows a lot about both, as her husband was an actor."
"This book changed the way I view myself as a writer, and strengthened my commitment to the practice of art. In this book, L'Engle offers meditations on what it takes to create art. Unlike other writing advice books, she focuses on some of the more spiritual aspects of leading a writing life.
There are three things that really stood out to me. First, she talks about writing as obedience and about being a servant to the art. She believes all great works of art are divinely inspired, and it is our job to have a daily practice in order to hear that divine inspiration.
Second, she talks about writing for children. She says we should not dumb down anything for children. I believe she practiced this in her writing, because everything she writes is always challenging and never caters to a general readership. I think this is what makes her so respected, in my mind, the fact that she doesn't feel she needs to make anything palatable. She respects the intelligence of her readers.
Finally, she talks about finding time to write. She says that as mothers, it is difficult to find time to write, and we need to be pigheaded about it. I love that word "pigheaded".
There are so many gems in this book. I know I will be re-reading this over my lifetime."
