"I didn't care much for this picture book. I like the genre, and I appreciate the reason that these books exist; I have fond memories of my own learning and reading back in the '80s. While Browne's depiction of class divides is realistic and intriguing, I think it's subtle enough to go over the heads of his intended readers; I'm not sure I would have understood the subtext it if I'd read it as a kid.
Something saddens me when kids are made to face the injustices of the world at a young age; it's bad enough as an adult. What happened to childhood innocence?
Didn't like those blooming monkeys, either...what's wrong with drawing people?"
"One story, four points of view- a snooty mother, her son, an out of work dad, his daughter and how they interact at a park one afternoon. FYI- as is typical of Anthony Browne, the "people" in the book are monkeys/gorillas."
