About this title: Johannes, a young Norwegian writer, falls deeply in love with Victoria, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Himself of working-class origins and far from established as an artist, Johannes cannot hope to marry someone so far above him socially. Victoria, for her part, is ambivalent, alternating in her moods between affection and contempt. Strongly autobiographical in its subject-matter, VICTORIA expresses both Hamsun's sensitivities as a writer and his frustrations as a man.

"A simple, torturous little book. A friend of mine summed it up best so I will plagiarize completely: Victoria is about two people who love each other so profoundly that all they can do is hurt one another.
In high school, much teenage drama comes from little spurns and cold shoulders-she didn't talk to me at the party, he wasn't listening when we talked on the phone, he was late to dinner, etc. Instead of starting as cafeteria gossip and dying when we grow older, these sorts of innocent rejections actually become more personal and painful as we grow up-and they're even harder to explain. Sure, people often hurt one another in broad strokes with cheating and lying and the such, but what sticks are the off-handed looks that speak the truth we're too often afraid to admit.
Hamsun understands this, and the trick of Victoria is making us believe in the irrational behavior of its heroes, Johannes and Victoria. They try to make one another jealous, they deny each other constantly, and yet they're irrevocably, even painfully in love. It's real short, but completely crushing and believable: middle school writ large in 19th century Norway."
"More like 3.5 stars. This book grew on me. But you can only read so many tales of enduring star-crossed love at first sight without wondering why these characters remain so attached to one another."
"Suppose you met someone when you were young, and something happened that convinced you beyond reasonable doubt that they loved you, and you loved them. And then, suppose that there were all sorts of practical problems, and that, on the rare occasions when you did meet them, you said the wrong thing, or they said the wrong thing, and people were hurt, or lost their tempers, and you started to wonder if you'd just hallucinated it all. And that this continued for your whole life.
Well, if you've ever had that kind of experience, you might like Victoria, a long, elegantly written prose-poem which pretty much does for hopeless love what Hunger does for being hungry. Wrap it up with a red bow, and give it to a carefully selected person as an unusual Valentine..."
