About this title: Once the most popular of Melville's works, TYPEE is the story of a Yankee sailor who enters a Pacific paradise, but it is also an adventure tale, an autobiographical account of the author's stay in Polynesia, and an examination of good and evil, sensuality, and exotic rituals.

"Although it is not insightful or brilliant as I suspect "Moby Dick" may be, this is an interesting and witty tale of living with a bunch of cannibals on a South Pacific island. It is a supposedly auto-biographical account of Melville's time as a young sailor. Tired of life at sea, he escapes to a tropical island where he is held as a pampered captive. He writes about the simple luxury in which these people lived compared to the harried civilization in America and Europe. It's interesting from an anthropologic point."
"This is considered a Juvenile and I think it should be required reading long before we make the youth of America loath Melville by forcing them to slog through Moby Dick."
"While this is a pretty interesting story, it could have been told a lot better. Melville spends too much space pontificating and describing the details of his surroundings. Overall, the characters are flat, and the drama is weakly expressed. Melville became a much better writer later in his life."
"early adventure story from Melville's experiences as a crewman in the South Pacific. typical of the genre, full of exotic natives and narrow escapes. Melville would find his voice later. this is formative work and not essential."
