"Let me first start by saying that I read this book when I was a wee girl of 11 and loved it straight off the bat. My English teacher suggested I read it and when I came in to school the very next day with the book finished and my heart brimming with a need to discuss it with her, she happily obliged and sent me home again with a stack of books from her personal collection for me to enjoy.
What set this book apart for me was that it instilled in my young, FEMALE soul a hunger for adventure, independence, creativity, and knowledge. Charlotte's adventures were exciting, inspiring, freeing, and ultimately made me want to learn more about the time period and what sailing was like in that time, especially for a woman.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone, really, but especially for the slightly shy girl, who is trying to discover who she is and is chomping at the bit to bust out of her shell."
"I loved this book! It had a great plot - perfect example of a plot arc. It shows how a character changes perfectly - and ESPECIALLY PERFECTLY shows how normal life is different in the beginning and the end. It is about a girl named Charlotte Doyle. She'd been at a finishing school in England, and was on a ship coming home to Providence, Rhode Island. She meets the only black man on the ship, Zachariah the cook. They share the fact that they are both unique to the ship, the only woman and only man. Charlotte also befriends the captain - because he invites her to tea and gives her a dose of her "real" life in society. On one of her polite teas with the captain, she accidentally rats out her friends, the crew, and especially Zachariah, for planning a rebellion against him. This causes the captain to kill Zachariah. . or so we think. She realizes what a terrible man the captain is, and then joins the crew! She requires them to call her Mister Doyle and make her wear sailor clothes. She has to prove herself first, though. She has to jump through the sails, over 100 feet! When she passes that test, then she is accepted as a member of the crew. Then, during a storm, the ship's first mate Mr. Hollybrass, Captain's second in command, is murdered. Captain accuses Charlotte, but then he arranges for her to be hanged! He agrees to a trial of her peers - the crew - but when no one proves her innocence, she is found guilty! Then, she finds Zachariah in her cell in the ship's hold! She thinks it is he who killed Mr. Hollybrass, and the crew was only protecting him! But she is wrong. She then devises a plan, and confides in another crew member and Zachariah. She goes into that plan, and goes to the Captain's office to begin, when Captain catches her, and he tells that the crew member told Captain! He gives her three options. One - be hanged. Two - resume being a passenger, and forget it ever happened. Three - kill him and go on with the plan. She refuses all of the options - and in a twist, overthrows Captain and becomes Captain! She returns home, only to prove herself changed, and one day, sneaks out to the same ship she took the voyage on, and remains a member of the crew."
"Just finished this for my book club. This book was picked because we've decided to read more Newbery Award winning books and because it was remembered with such reverence by most ladies in my book club. I'll be honest, I am sure I was right there along with everyone else saying, "Oh yeah, I LOVED Charlotte Doyle." Now, I honestly think I've never read this book until this past weekend. I read it at my brother's house and when he saw it he said, "What are you reading? Everyone and their dog has read that book." Yeah, I really don't know I've read this book. It was all COMPLETELY new to me. I'm floored. I remember this book on my bookshelf growing up. Maybe I rejected it because it was so trendy. I'm not about to just read a book for a trend, even if I am 12 years old. (Yes, I read Twilight at least a year before most of my friends.) Back to the review, I enjoyed the book but a bit predictable. Charlotte kind of got on my nerves and that bothered me because I know I was supposed to like her. Plus, who would voluntarily pick to live on a ship with the sun beating down on you all day long, sleeping with cockroaches, eating hard tack with worms in it, over living in a huge house with servants. Yeah right."
