"I'll be honest -- this is a tough book to read. William Bartram is writing about his travels in the American southeast in 1773. He was a botanist, and in those days, botanists described everything in Latin. Even for me (and I have studied Latin plant names), the long lists of plants he observed got old several times. Still, when I kept pushing forward through the book, I got a real feel for what the country looked like in those days, which is quite remarkable. One example is his attempt to spend the night alone in northern Florida without being eaten by alligators. Don't expect an easy read, but do expect some awesome discoveries."
