"This book is a collection of the author's thoughts and reflections on many and various subjects. She is a satirical, tongue-in-cheek comedian. Here are just a few of my favorites (some are rather thought provoking and serious).
"The two best prayers I know: 'Help me, help me, help me.' AND 'Thank you, thank you, thank you.'" "Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure." Rumi "I've been thinking of killing myself, but I need to lose five pounds first." "The glasses of puberty make us see all our flaws." "Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die." "I am not the keeper of my Mother's thermostat." "I am not my packaging." "I wish I'd been given a mother who likes children."
I got the book on interlibrary loan. I would like to get one of my own for reference. There are too many jewels to keep track of. However, I will need to spend some time with a black marker : )
Warning: she uses inappropriate language and has loose opinions about who and what God is. However, I think she is hilarious inbetween."
"I adore Anne Lamott and this book. She is the most realistic Christian woman I have read in quite a long time, if not ever. She doesn't claim to have it all figured out and is far from perfect, but she loves Jesus openly and joyfully. Anne honestly writes about her childhood, adulthood and all of the in between times filled with alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, and pain; and explains how she finally found herself in the most unlikely place by finding Jesus. Without being preachy or making me feel like I've got it all wrong (like many Christian books on faith seem to do) Anne writes about herself with such brutal, knock you upside the head truth; from her admission that her thighs reveal a mom who has forgotten to work out, to her distain of another mom at her son's school that she secretly loathes. I can so relate to her, she is authentic and inspiring to read. I laughed out loud and cried openly, and reminded myself that no two Christians have to look just alike. It is okay to be who we are, after all - God created us to be that way. I can't wait to get my hands on her another Anne Lamott book."
"This book is not what I expected, I guess that's what I liked about it. I enjoyed her novel the Blue Shoe so when I happened upon this book in the church bookstore, I was intrigued. She is a liberal political activitist from San Francisco and her story and journey through faith is so refreshing. She really breaks the typical Christian mold and gives faith a perspective through the lense of a liberal, progressive political activist. I love the chapter on forgiveness related to the school moms. A mother who is completely opposite of her but their boys are friends asks to read copy of her book that she wrote about being a mother. Lamont tried to stall: "It is black-humored and quite slanted: George Bush was president when Sam was born and perhaps I was a little angry. I had these tiny opinions. I wrote an anti-George Bush baby book." I found myself laughing throughout.
It's humorous, honest and genuine. It's a quick read that is enjoyable. I recommend it."
"I had heard such wonderful things about Traveling Mercies, maybe I was just setting myself up for disappointment. To make matters worse, I have read Anne Lamott's book on writing, Bird by Bird, and loved it AND her.
Traveling Mercies was just okay. It's well written and interesting, because Anne Lamott is an interesting person. The first chapters which chronicle her life journey to faith were fascinating, if sad. But after some pages of this, I started to feel like her constant self-deprecating yet simultaneously self-absorbed navel-gazing was more affected than affecting.
There were some very good and thought-provoking chapters. I adored the chapter on prayer. It was funny and sweet at the same time and contained a lot of truth. But all the same, I finished the book with a slight unpleasant aftertaste from the overtones of I-am-too-good-for-the-regular-Christianity."
