Fascinating Stories, Sep 19, 2009
By Morizou, Urbana, IL

"The first collection of tales about Joseph Jorkens; if you like Sherlock Holmes stories (especially those with the glimmer of a science-fiction element), you should like these. The stories seemed arranged well, with the introductions of the first few building upon one another and the last two stories being connected in theme (the desire to have mystery and magic in life). Interesting theme had to do with what happens when humans are not at the top of the pecking order. An interesting quotation from 'The Witch of the Willows': 'if you ask people about anything strange and they know about it or think they know, they will delight to pour out information, not very accurately; but if they don’t know of it they look at you rather queerly, and anyway it is better to talk of ordinary things to them' (pp. 284–285)."
