About this title: At last, the missing piece of the dysfunctional puzzle. It is not enough to understand or even relive our childhood traumas. Dr. Wolinsky shows us how we continue to recreate those traumas in our adult lives and how to stop creating them. Every uncomfortable emotional state, and many psychosomatic symptoms, are also states of trance. Trance is the "glue" that holds the problem in the present moment. Learning to identify the kind of trance state beneath a problem or symptom gives us the tool that finally dissolves the glue. This book offers a gold-mine of resources for those who suffer from ...

"I think this book is well written and worth reading. Wolinsky has an interesting habit of publishing books that are works in progress, and this one seems like a more complete work than others of his. His other less complete works are also worth reading, but are often full of annoying typos and inadequately expressed thoughts.
The basic premise is that most ordinary states of consciousness for most people are trance states (times when attention is narrowed and fixated out of present time experience). In this book, Wolinsky expounds on this premise; catalogues various ordinary trance states; describes therapeutic uses of trance; and more.
And in the end we learn from Wolinsky that the goal is to de-hypnotize ourselves so that we are free from the limitations of these ordinary trance states."
"The Buddha, when asked if he was enlightened, responded, "I am awake." Whether this quote is historically accurate or not, it makes the point well.
This book explains how we stay in a trance most of the time, even when we think we are awake. Dr. Wolinsky tells us how to recognize trances, how to gain control over them, and most significantly, how to eliminate them. Once we have eliminated trances from our life we live in a fully awakened state. In other words, we live in the now instead of in a reverie about what might be.
Dr. Wolinsky combines the insights gained from years of meditation and study of Eastern traditions with a Western education in psychotherapy. He draws heavily on the work of Milton Erickson. The result is an owner's manual for taking control of our trance states, which is to say, for eliminating them. We use trances to limit ourselves in a thousand ways, and when they are gone our live experience expands.
He emphasizes the importance of recognizing the mental processes we use to shape our experience of living. The content, he says, is secondary. Understand the process and we control the content. Dr. Wolinsky, I believe, is bringing back his meditational experiences and putting them into a psychological framework that Westerners might relate to more easily. This material overlaps with neurolinguistic programming (see ) and Yoga and Psychotherapy). They form a great triad.
This book is a major resource in my toolkit for understanding the structure of consciousness. In case it matters to you, it is highly recommended by John Bradshaw. I also recommend it highly."
