"I have enjoyed all of Hayden's books about the troubled children she has taught. Maybe because I have no patience for less than brilliant children well behaved children or for myself as I loose brain cells, I am glad to know that there are people in this world who love to and are good at tolerating and healing injured souls."
"One in a series in which Hayden recalls her work as a teacher and therapist for psychologically disturbed children. In this particular book, she reconnects with Sheila, a six-year-old girl she worked with in a previous book who was prone to violent rages and elective mutism. Sheila is a teenager now, and by tracking the course of her life this book squarely confronts some of the difficulties inherent in the 1-year school approach, and in Hayden's books themselves. It's incredibly meta-analytical (Hayden gives Sheila a pre-publication copy of the previous book about her, and they discuss the different ways they remember things and personal motivations). Clever, complicated, self-reflective, a little rueful."
"I liked this book a lot because it shows a lot of Tory Hayden's vulnerabilities that you don't see in One Child. The story is sad but real, and in the end it seems Sheila turned out ok. At least she was not on drugs or homeless, and she seemed to have an incredibly strong sense of independence for someone her age, so it leaves you hopeful that everything works out for her."
