"A 3- 5th grade read, it is a very realistic account of a family coming aboard the Mayflower to find new land, hope, and opportunity fueled by the desire to escape religious dictation of England. They came among hundreds to this new place, cold, hungry and hopeful only to have many of them die from the Great Sickness. One family, a husband, wife and their two children, with one on the way, would be broken when the mother and new baby would be among the numbers to die of this unknown illness. Meeting Indians who would teach them to farm, build shelter to endure the brutal winters, they danced, made merry and feasted; thus Thanksgiving was born. The strengths of this book were in the historical facts, however, the weaknesses were that they left out all the historical negativity of the new European settlers taking over and hoarding the new land and killing the Indians."
"This almost felt like two books. There was the story of the Three Young Pilgrims and then there was more detailed information about the Mayflower or the Indians or what have you. I felt like sometimes the story got lost by an interruption of "details". You don't really hear about why they left England until the end of the book, which was a bit odd. We all enjoyed it, however, and the illustrations are fantastic.
There isn't much here that we hadn't already read in another book. But it was a nice addition. My boys enjoyed looking through the pictures and finding the people who went with the names they'd been learning. They didn't really grasp the death toll until they saw the large group picture and there was a small mark by each person's name who had died before the end of the first year. Their jaws dropped as they finally realized what it had been like and how young some of them had been.
"The author and illustrator, Cheryl Harness, has created a panorama of paintings that captures the Pilgrim story from the time that three young children, Mary, Remember, and Bartholomew, find themselves in the middle of the ocean on the Mayflower, until Mary's death in 1699. If your children are visual learners, you've got to get this book. The first major painting is a map of the Atlantic Ocean showing the sailing Mayflower with geographical notes tracing the adventures of the Pilgrims from the time they fled England for Holland until they settled in Plymouth. The next double-page spread is a cross-section of the Mayflower showing the people and supplies crowded onto the various parts of the ship. The main story is illustrated by spectacular paintings showing life on the Mayflower and in Plymouth. Then there is a labeled picture-map of Plymouth Plantation with a time-line of earlier New World explorations along the bottom and an illustrated chart on the far right showing what else was going on in other parts of the world while the Pilgrims were having their adventures. The last pages in the book contain labeled pictures of all the Mayflower passengers, with one double-page spread allotted to the Saints, and another to the Strangers, and the difference between them explained. The Indians get their own double-page spread which is bordered with small drawings of native plants, animals, and sea-life. The last page is a bibliography."
"We are studying the origins of Thanksgiving, and therefore also the Pilgrims, in school during the month of November. And WOW it has so opened my eyes to all that was suffered to give us a free country! I hope it can stay that way. This is one of the books we are reading for the month."
