"This book was mentioned to my youth group a few years ago to read. The book does a very good and different look at how demons posses you. It's about a town that starts going through some rough times and people arent themselves, but starting with just one person who believes God can help this town they turn it into a community belief to help friends and family turn from these demons. I have to admit that this story made me terrified at nights while i was reading it. The second book i only got a couple chapters into and then realized it is too much like the first one so i quit. But this book is a wonderful story and i enjoyed it."
"Ehhh....a long, long time ago I read Peretti's Piercing the Darkness, and didn't like it. Fast-forward many years, and I figure I'll give This Present Darkness a shot, but no, it has the same issues that PtD has, and gives me the same squik. The angels seem to be absolutely useless without a prayer cover, which I personally don't like, since they are such powerful divine beings. As long as God gives the word, they can blast away, right? Okay, maybe it's not as simple as that, but still, somehow the portrayals of everyone seems lacking. I'm not drawn to any character. The dialogue gets rather boring, the bad guys are all hur-hur Evil, which would be fine if I were actually frightened, but there's no suspense whatsoever. Stephen King this is not. I think I've been more spooked out by a random occult-themed X-Files episode.
All in all, disappointing, especially since this series is touted as one of the go-to novels for Christian fiction. Maybe my hopes were too high? But so far I haven't been impressed by any Christian fiction that wasn't by C.S.Lewis, G.K.Chesterton, or Tolkien."
"I have read this book years ago when I was younger. I have also read Piercing the Darkness and The Oath. I've just purchased Monster which leaves two of Frank's books left to buy: House and The Visitation. I recommend all of Frank's books.
One should read this book, not with 21st Century CG's nor with the idea that it is a "religious" book. Replace, in your mind's eye (imagination), the "good" and "bad" angels with say, gangsters and cops, or cowboys and indians ...
Frank E. Peretti is one of the best "Christian" fiction to date. Read this and all of the books written by Peretti.
"Frank E. Peretti's book This Present Darkness is brilliant. This is my second time reading this book, and I am even more impressed than the first time that I had read it, which was many years ago. As I read through it, I realized that I didn't remember large parts of the story and was so glad to have decided to read it again.
The story centers around two principal characters, Hank Busche, a new pastor of a small church in a nondescript college town, and Marshall Hogan, recently transplanted publisher of the local newspaper. Points-of-view change not only among various earthly characters but also among both angelic and demonic beings.
It is absolutely fascinating to get a glimpse of what the spiritual realm of our existence might be like! The overarching message of this story is the unequaled spiritual power of saints' prayers over the workings of evil. Peretti does a masterly job of storytelling, weaving multiple threads of experience, POV, plot, goals, schemes, attacks, counterattacks, and the spiritual awakening of mortal characters. As I finished reading, my only consolation in "leaving" the POV of angels is that I have the sequel Piercing the Darkness sitting next to me, which I will eagerly open up to read as soon as I have posted this review!"
