""I've seen what commitment leads to. Going in is the easy part. It's the ending that sucks!" This is the way Remy Starr views relationships. Her father left her family of two, 4 years after she was born. A few months later he passes away leaving her a song ,"This Lullaby", and nothing else to remember him by. Because of her father walking out on her family she is not able to believe in relationships. This book was amazing. The pain and confusion that Remy was going through, I was feeling as well. The way she closes up not only to Dexter but to her self also is just one of the many things people in this world do. They are afraid to open up to anyone, afraid to take risks, afraid to believe in something they have grown up thinking does not exsist. She meets Dexter. Her feelings towards him are so strong she dosen't want to addmit to them. It goes against everything she's believed in. It is way intresting to just see the way Remy handles this situation. She grows and you grow with her."
"So this was my first Sarah Dessen book; since I've noticed several titles by her, I thought I'd give one a try (plus, it was on the bargain table at Books-a-million). The book is about Remy, who has grown up with a very cynical view about love. She's always done easy, disposable relationships until she meets Dexter. He's pretty much everything she hates, but he pursues her so goodnaturedly and with such charm that eventually she can't resist him. Suddenly she's in a relationship she isn't sure it will be so easy to walk away from.
The book was pleasant, if somewhat predictable. But it did strike a nerve with me that many of the YA books I've been reading recently do: is it just me, or do all the heroines drink, experiment with drugs, and get physically involved easily? I find it a little disturbing, but I guess it's just a result of my fairly conservative small-town upbringing. While I was definitely no wild child, I imagine I would have heard about girls behaving like this when I was growing up. Do MOST teen girls act this way today? If not, what are books like this telling them? This book is classified as YA, but - like so many others in the genre - I question if it's really appropriate for girls in the 12-15 range."
It was good, but not great. It hit all the "right" plot points and the ending was very satisfying.
Ok, now explain yourself:
Remy is so sure that she knows how relationships work. She has a schedule, a Speech, and a formula to determine when she'll break up with a guy. She does not date musicians. She's known as a bitch, an image she cultivates so that no one gets attached to her. Of course at heart she's not REALLY one, right? This was my main problem with the book, I thought Remy herself was a cliche. Dessen seemed to have a checklist- ok, bitch in situation A, B, C, softhearted here, conflicted HERE, etc. I didn't really like Remy, which lessened my enjoyment of the book overall.
Dexter is cuter than cute. He's funny and charming and sure of himself. The flap hints at him being a bad boy, but I didn't get that at all. From the minute he launches himself through her window, I loved him. The Truth Squad (his band) was also a bit of a cliche, but it didn't matter so much because they worked in this situation.
The whole novel is about Remy figuring out that she can take a risk and love someone, even though it doesn't always work out. It's about her emotional turmoil while she discovers this about herself- but I didn't really buy it. I couldn't figure out if I thought she really believed from the beginning or if I just didn't like the obviousness of her realization or what, but it didn't quite work. Other people might not have the same reaction and it didn't actually ruin the book for me, but it did keep it from being a top favorite. I did love Dexter (a lot) and felt he really made the book worth reading."
