"Remy is a bit caustic about love. Her father wrote her a lullaby that turned him into a one hit wonder. The lullaby was the only thing he ever gave her. Her mother is a romance novelist on her fifth marriage. Remy just graduated from high school and this story is about the summer 'between' before she heads off to Stanford. She has always been the mother in the relationship with her mother. She has always taken care of everything. Remy has always protected herself from love by having a formula by which she picks up a guy and dumps him within a short amount of time. This summer she is ready to have another fling and then head off empty handed to college. Then she meets Dexter. He is a musician that eats in her car, doesn't tie his shoes, make his bed or even have food in the fridge. Dexter is quirky and a much freer spirit than Remy.
I picked this book up determined to hate it. I thought it was going to be like all of the other teen lit that I have seen lately. Way over sexualized and without a point. Well the book was meh. I did not like the constant drinking and smoking. The underage drinking did lead Remy into trouble which was only touched on. Remy was able to acknowledge that she was heading down a bad path because of the way she acted. She was also able to realize that she was wrong about many of the things that she thought. She was willing to change when she learned something about herself.
There was not sex despite what I thought! At least not explicit. You know that Remy is a pretty loose girl but nothing beyond that."
""I've seen what commitment leads to. Going in is the easy part. It's the ending that sucks!" This is the way Remy Starr views relationships. Her father left her family of two, 4 years after she was born. A few months later he passes away leaving her a song ,"This Lullaby", and nothing else to remember him by. Because of her father walking out on her family she is not able to believe in relationships. This book was amazing. The pain and confusion that Remy was going through, I was feeling as well. The way she closes up not only to Dexter but to her self also is just one of the many things people in this world do. They are afraid to open up to anyone, afraid to take risks, afraid to believe in something they have grown up thinking does not exsist. She meets Dexter. Her feelings towards him are so strong she dosen't want to addmit to them. It goes against everything she's believed in. It is way intresting to just see the way Remy handles this situation. She grows and you grow with her."
It was good, but not great. It hit all the "right" plot points and the ending was very satisfying.
Ok, now explain yourself:
Remy is so sure that she knows how relationships work. She has a schedule, a Speech, and a formula to determine when she'll break up with a guy. She does not date musicians. She's known as a bitch, an image she cultivates so that no one gets attached to her. Of course at heart she's not REALLY one, right? This was my main problem with the book, I thought Remy herself was a cliche. Dessen seemed to have a checklist- ok, bitch in situation A, B, C, softhearted here, conflicted HERE, etc. I didn't really like Remy, which lessened my enjoyment of the book overall.
Dexter is cuter than cute. He's funny and charming and sure of himself. The flap hints at him being a bad boy, but I didn't get that at all. From the minute he launches himself through her window, I loved him. The Truth Squad (his band) was also a bit of a cliche, but it didn't matter so much because they worked in this situation.
The whole novel is about Remy figuring out that she can take a risk and love someone, even though it doesn't always work out. It's about her emotional turmoil while she discovers this about herself- but I didn't really buy it. I couldn't figure out if I thought she really believed from the beginning or if I just didn't like the obviousness of her realization or what, but it didn't quite work. Other people might not have the same reaction and it didn't actually ruin the book for me, but it did keep it from being a top favorite. I did love Dexter (a lot) and felt he really made the book worth reading."
