"Perhaps I have an immunity to the chills of Stephen King's writing, but this book is not scary. The storyline itself is about an overweight lawyer who gets cursed for killing a gypsy woman and begins to lose weight... without ever reaching a limit. As his friends and family all become frightened and baffled by his inexplicable weight loss, the lawyer is haunted by ominous images of impending disintegration. The novel itself is quite suspenseful and intriguing, but overall the book did not have a very memorable effect on me. Coincidentally, I finished this book on Friday the 13th."
"I had a surprisingly hard time putting this down. Someone described it to me as a "lesser" Stephen King work, which is true, and I noticed it was written as a 'Richard Bachman' book. (Oh, if only I knew someone that has read almost every Stephen King book and could tell me why he wrote under a pseudonym after becoming an established author.)
The book is slowly paced but still someone captivating. Sadly the end seemed very rushed -- it was a good enough ending, but fast and anticlimactic."
"Unlike most Stephen King books (in my experience), this one has a main character you can't really bring yourself to like, maybe because this was originally written under King's pen name Richard Bachman. Through all Billy's cursed weightloss, he struggles and works against it, continuing to blame his wife. He never really accepted responsibility for his part in the accident that killed the gypsy woman. His wife was kind of unlikeable, too. Had it not been for their innocent daughter, I wouldn't have cared when they both ate the pie."
"Another great read from the King of horror: Stephen King. This was the first time I read him under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman & was also my first SK bookclub read. To those that haven`t read the book, the story is about an overweight lawyer by the name of Billy Halleck who accidentally knocks down a gypsy woman & kills her. The case goes to court, but it gets away with it (thanks to his friend the judge!). Outside the courtroom the gypsy`s father puts a curse on Billy by putting his finger on his cheek & saying `Thinner`to him. It`s not long before he discovers that he is losing weight & fast. He knows it`s not down to dieting, as he has been eating as heartily as ever, which leads him to ask himself whether the gypsy actually did put a curse on him.
I won`t ruin the rest of the story but just say, that Billy goes on a crazy journey in order to get his curse lifted, & like any man (or woman) that is fighting to stay alive, he will do just about anything to survive! The ending is an unexpected one, but just highlights the fact that fate has a way of catching up with you, no matter how hard you try to run away from it."
