About this title: Therese Raquin is a clinically observed, sinister tale of adultery and murder among the lower orders in nineteenth-century Paris. Zola's dispassionate dissection of the motivations of his characters, mere 'human beasts' who kill in order to satisfy their lust, is much more than an atmospheric Second Empire period-piece. Many readers were ...

"Despite some flaws (probably because of the fact that this is an early work by Zola), this is a very entertaining read, especially if you like over-the-top murder scenarios. It is a haunting story, with a ghost that torments, but the supernatural aspect is supplicated by the authors understanding of psychology (which works). There are some great scenes. It is a fun read if you enjoy gruesome and sexual descriptions in your 19th century literature."
"Possibly the most depressing book I have ever read. Too much heavy-handed "sins have consequences" for me. Everyone seemed to be surrounded by unbearable choices with no way out, especially the women. It made me glad I am a woman in America in the 2000's and not a woman in Paris in the 1860's. If you don't want to marry your sickly cousin, for heaven's sake, tell your rich aunt "No, I don't think so". Don't marry him and then hate everyone and everything for the rest of your life!
On the up side, I kind of liked reading about daily life in Paris in the 1860's, but I'd really suggest Les Miserables instead of this book if you're after stories with Paris in them."
"Dark, creepy, intense, disgusting...I like. If you want a classic read with adultery, murder, and corpses, try this one. Two desperate, adulterous individuals murder the one person that stands between them. Instead of finding happiness, the couple is haunted by insane terror. The book reads like a ghost story, although by 19th century standards it was labeled a "psychological study." Also, considering that it was written in the 1860's, it is rather explicit and graphic in some places. One thing that annoyed me was that, due to the translation, some words are repeated over and over (because many French words have only one English equivalent). Also, sometimes the changing tenses are hard to follow, as is the chronology of the flashbacks. Nevertheless, I agree with the blurb on the back cover: "This book has lost none of its power to shock!""
"One of the best books I have ever read! It was a recommendation from a bookshop owner in France. I haven't read the english translation, but for Zola, the French isn't that difficult. It is also really short for Zola who is an author much like Hemmingway that tends to be longwinded.
Therese Raquin is about a woman who is married to a man whom she thinks of as a brother. She meets one of his friends, a strong, verile, masculine man in comparison to her feeble, quiet husband. She begins an affair and in the heat of their passion decide to kill Therese's husband. The rest of the novel shows the psychological and spiritual breakdown of these two tortured souls."
