About this title: Part of Pluto's 21st birthday series "Get Political", which brings essential political writing in a range of fields to a new audience. This new edition of "Theater of the Oppressed" brings a classic work on radical drama fully up to date and includes a new introduction by the author Augusto Boal. Boal restores theatre to its proper place as a popular form of communication and expression. He demonstrates the ways in which theatre has come to reflect ruling-class control, drawing on the theories of Aristotle and Machiavelli. He then shows the process reversed in Brechtian/Marxist poetics to the ...

"The theory behind Theatre of the Oppressed - fascinating look at the artform of theatre and it's effect upon us. It can get a little thick at times when talking about different theorists or major playwrights."
"In effect there are two parts to this book: a section that deals with political theory as it is intertwined with the evolution of the theatre, and then a section dealing with the work Boal and others did in developing inclusive, interactive approaches to theatre.
As someone with a degree in political science, who has not taken a theatre class, has not been in any kind of production of anything in over 22 years, etc., I have to confess that the theoretical sections were much more relevant to me than the rest, especially toward the end where the methodology really begins to lose me. But the theoretical constructs are riveting, and makes me lament that I never actually got to experience anything approaching theatre criticism.
I feel like there is something much more potentially political and socially important about theatre than I ever really thought before. Frankly, since the theatre types I knew were largely knuckleheads or people who seemed to be trying to "find themselves" or what not, it was always kind of easy to be dismissive. I find that all most unfortunate now."
"Highest possible recommendation to those who live/teach theatre. Get it and learn it and use it. Awesome interactive theatre that can be used as a problem solving tool, a method of conflict resolution, and much more. It's a game-changer."
"Boal's philosophical readings get a little sloppy at times here, but the central insight guiding the book is a powerful one. Picking up on Freire's idea that an authoritarian communication/education structure will counteract even a radical choice of content, Boal attempts to envision a non-authoritarian theater.
At its best, Boal's answer radically reimagines "theater" as instead a sort of "theater workshop," in which all learn the skills necessary to participate. This sort of theater may not be an actual revolution, he says again and again, but it's practice for a revolution. The theater becomes a sort of experimental laboratory for revolutionary praxis.
Even at its worst, Boal's experimental theater is still fascinating. The so-called "Joker" theater structure is a way at critically dissecting traditional theater from within, a "structure" for theatrical deconstruction. If coupled with the earlier experiments, the "Joker" system could indeed provide the blueprint for a non-authoritarian theater. That said, Boal himself seems to take the Joker system as a stand-alone component; in which case it tends to veer dangerously close to the elitist vanguardism Freire's work sets out to warn us against.
Overall an excellent--and light, fairly easy--read, and an invaluable aid in attempting to diagnose, critique, and rethink authoritarian structures."
