"Summary: Way back when "skirts were long and hats were tall" Americans were forgetting Thanksgiving, and nobody seemed to care! Thankfully, Sarah Hale appeared. More steadfast than Plymouth Rock, this lady editor knew the holiday needed saving. But would her recipe for rescue ever convince Congress and the presidents? Join acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson on a journey of a woman and a pen that spanned four decades, the Civil War, and five presidents, all so you could have your turkey and eat it too!
Genre: historical fiction Reading Level: This book is best for late transitional readers. There are multiple lines of small text on many of the pages, but the author gives the readers a break in several instances when she increases the font size and only writes one line of text on several pages. There are complex sentence patterns because she started many of the sentences with prepositions and included some regular and some harder phonetic regularities. There are many multi-syllable words in this story about Sarah Hale including: historical, monuments, magazine, and Thanksgiving, to name just a few. If the readers are not familiar with the governmental content words and Presidential figures, they may have trouble with the language in this book. Topics: Thanksgiving, persistence, Sarah Hale, rejection, perseverance Curriculum Uses: I would use this book for a read aloud during the Thanksgiving season. I think that this book is engaging not only because of the information that it provides for students, but because of the illustrations that are like comic sketches of the situations that the book depicts. This book would also be great to support a lesson about historical figures. I would give this to a student to read independently after teaching a mini-lesson about writing autobiographies. Literary Devices: This book uses repetition to get the purpose across to readers, especially when explaining how Sarah decided to write about everything that she believed in and protested. The author used imagery to appeal to the senses in her depictions of people and objects. She also included conflict in the story. This conflict was man vs. man, and man vs. society. I think that the point of view that the author chose to write from, which was third person helped reveal the characters more to the readers. Other literary devices included in this book are: theme, tone, mood, and the presence of a protagonist. Social Issues: national holiday, having a controversial argument against the majority, gender bias, slavery, political stances Illustrations and Text: These illustrations support the text because they depict many of the scenarios presented by the author. The pictures are very detailed and provide support for a struggling reader. They convey the humorous tone in the book and serve as a source of entertainment for readers. They also convey the complex person that Sarah Hale was."
"Summary: We the people of the United States... Almost Lost Thanksgiving Yes. That's right! Way back when "skirts were long and hats were tall" Americans were forgetting Thanksgiving, and nobody seemed to care! Thankfully, Sarah Hale appeared. More steadfast than Plymouth Rock, this lady editor knew the holiday needed saving. But would her recipe for rescue ever convince Congress and the presidents? Genre: Fictional Picture Book Reading Level: This book is late transitional with several sentences on each page. The font is rather small and the text is detailed. Topics: How Thanksgiving was saved, America's history Curriculum Uses: This book would be great to read aloud before children go on their thanksgiving break. It could also be assigned to read independently during their Thanksgiving break or used in a history lesson. Social Issues: This book discusses a story about America's past and how a young women was able to break through all the barriers against women. Women's rights is a huge part of this story. It also occurs during the time of the Civil War which brings up the issue of slavery. Literary Elements: This book uses hyperboles to emphasize points throughout the story. This book also contains a lot of imagery and adverbs to better explain the text. Illustrations & Text: The text gives many details and historical information throughout it. The illustrations help to better explain aspects of the text. The illustrations show maps and what actual historical figures look liked. The illustrations are very accurate and detailed, which allow the text to be better understood."
