About this title: "Teacher" was first published in 1963 to excited acclaim. Its author, Sylvia Ashton-Warner, who lived in New Zealand and spent many years teaching Maori children, found that Maoris taught according to British methods were not learning to read. They were passionate, moody children, bred in an ancient legend-haunted tradition; how could she build them a bridge to European culture that would enable them to take hold of the great joy of reading? Aston-Warner devised a method whereby written words became prized possession for her students. Today her findings are strikingly relevant to the teaching ...

"No other book influenced my imagination and practice of teaching than this book. It inspired me to forego the boilerplate as much as possible and keep reinventing each course, each semester, each year."
"Teacher turned out to be as good in 2008 as when I read it in the sixties. Now that I have granddaughters learning to read, I wondered if I could still get this excellent, heart warming guide. Found it on Alibris and read it in a couple of days--stunned at Sylvia Ashton-Warner's brilliance as she explained her organic approach to teaching reading. In this book, her students were Maori's from New Zealand, struggling to enter the dominant culture, but her technique applies to any child first meeting words. That this method was known in the late 40's, when Ashton-Warner did the teaching that led to her story, and that we still cannot get children excited about reading, is a crime. I have passed it on to my daughter-in-law who is home-schooling her girls. The six year old, reluctant at first, is catching on--she played Scrabble with her dad this week. Take heart! Read this book."
