About this title: A young officer is stationed in a remote area and wishes only to escape. Gradually, however, he falls in love with the place, which is both mountainous and desert-like, and spends most of his life there. Written in 1938, Dino Buzzati's deliberately uneventful allegory owes debts to Kafka as well as to Calvino.

"Pallid description, tedious plot, a banalest theme. Really a meaningless repetition of Kafka without any inspirational insight. Life is absolutely absurd. Hope is an allusion. Man keeps theatiing himself. Can Buzzati tell something more than all of them? "Italian Kafka" is an quite undeserved honour to this untalented imitator. Two stars is for his fairly serious writing attitude."
"Buzzati has some really interesting thoughts on hope and desires. There are some great lines in there, some to do with life like being the pages turning in a book.
