"This is out in two formats: I read a version which wasn't divided into three novels, but you can also find the three novels of the trilogy separately. Not sure if there's any difference, but my copy is certainly one novel, and not three. Guy Crouchback goes to war as a member of the Halberdiers, a quasi-aristocratic regiment. He is trying to fight 'The Modern World in Arms,' but this is all complicated by the alliance with the USSR. As the book develops, the vision of aristocratic purity is broken down again and again. All the comedy (exploding toilets etc...) eventually adds up to a great gap and a great example of the vacuous happy ending which fails to cover up all the problems the book has created. This is a great read, and interesting too."
"Since this book is the third of a trilogy, which I didn't know when I first picked it up, it was a bit hard to follow at first. It was like turning on a television movie that looks really interesting, but which is already half finished. At first, it took some time to figure out, even with the help of the forward. And some of the characters I still couldn't place in my mind. But the dialogues were enjoyable, the plot pleasing, and the underlying theme of the most important things in life not being subject to scientific quantification quite well established. The book does boost one's trust in God, even in the midst of suffering, and it showed that sacrifice is the choice that love makes.
And I loved the word describing a comb missing some teeth: undenticulated."
"not an easy read. many characters flowing in and out of the three volumes. an interesting and seemingly realistic view of WWII from the viewpoint of an average middle-aged Englishman who enlisted in his 30s"
"An interesting take on the British experience of World War Two and also of Anglo Catholicism by the author of Brideshead Revisited. Recommended to me by one of my high school teachers who had lived the same sort of muddled war time experience. A good parallel to Anthony Powell's account of the war in the volumes of his Dance to the Music of Time sequence that cover the war."
