"I was a little disappointed with this one, because it was touted as such a standard setting historical Arthur novel. The story rambled a little and the plot curve was not steep enough for my taste. Yet, descriptions were well painted and the world of Arthur very presented very convincingly. If you are into Arthurian stories, I would recommend it.
"Rosemary Sutcliff is the best writer to translate the era of Roman Britain, early medieval Britain, and Arthurian legend. (See her other books, too) The historical setting and events are accurate but never seem like a text book. Instead, they provide a rich experience of life at that time. The characters and plot are well drawn and captivating. Finally, her language, which uses archaic phrases and full description, helps to create the time period and the characters' personalities. At first, a reader must focus and slow his reading pace, but soon the adjustment is made and the reader gains by it."
"The only adult novel Sutcliff wrote. That means it's thicker, wordier, and a bit dirtier than her children's books. Here she describes what the real King Arthur might have been like, giving us a story rooted in a very little known period of Britain's history. The result is a tale a lot grittier and (in the long run) sadder than the sweeping, romantic legends of the young boy drawing the sword out of the stone."
