"Finally Dr Maturin displays his abilities in this last three books resolving several story lines with his work in espionage. He even gets Diana to finally marry him."
"This, Mr. O'Brian's Seventh in the Aubrey-Maturin series, starts out with the touch-and-go completion of Aubrey's escape from the United States, with Maturin with him. The doctor had escaped with his life, and with the great love of his life, Diana Villiers. Hence the pun of the title.
Yet their on-again, off-again relationship still seems doomed to failure. Now that he has seen her again, Maturin's long-cherished love for her seems somehow to have cooled and gone out of his life.
We travel to Paris itself and eventually on a very delicate and dangerous mission to the Baltic. Unforeseen events ensue, with Aubrey and Maturin involved in an even more delicate situation, before the various threads of the story come together in closure."
"Another great book in O'Brian's series about a captain in the British Royal Navy and his naturalist/physician friend during the Napoleonic wars. This one gets our main characters back on the high seas after a bit of a detour in America. Despite a couple of too-easy subplot resolutions at the end the book was excellent and a nice return to form for the series.
According to the cover, the New York Times Book Review calls this series, "The best historical novels ever written." I'm not normally one for reading historical fiction, so I can't verify whether that's true, but this is the 7th of these books I've read, and I'm still really enjoying it. The series is so immersing, the characters well-crafted and likable, and the action enthralling. If I weren't careful I would just go from one book to the next and not read anything else, since the series must be close to 20 books. I read this entire book in just 4 days, which is quite a feat for me these days. I keep telling my friends to check it out but so far they haven't got to it. Come on people! Someone pick up a copy of Master and Commander and see what I mean."
