"This is a thought-provoking book. was it within Wiesnethal's power to give absolution to a dieing enemy? What would you do? Personally, I don't know how I would have handled the same situation. I know how I would want to react to the German's request, but it is an easy resolution for me to decide as I sit in my comfortable, safe living room here in the US. Would I feel the same if I had had to endured the hell that Simon Wiesenthal had to endure? I felt this was a very worthwhile read, and I would highly recommend it."
"Like is an odd term for this book. By giving it 4 stars on this website, I am saying that I really liked this book. I am glad I read these essays; this book was extremely thought-provoking for me and I will remember Wiesenthal's questions for a very long time. But like, I am not sure that is possible.
This is not a book that the reader enjoys. If I am honest with myself, Simon Wiesenthal makes me squirm with his story. When he encountered that Nazi SS solider, he could have been meeting me. I am not sure if I could have resisted the Nazis. I am not sure that I would disobey my government. I hope and pray that I would, but we never know until we are actually in a perilous situation how we will behave.
I learned a great deal from the essayists in this book. I now know the way different religions define forgiveness. As I have read the responses of 46 different people to the question asked, my answer to the question changed. Many of the essays pointed out aspects of Wiesenthal's story that I missed.
I had wanted to read this book for some time. I am fortunate that happenstance put the book in my hands this fall. I will think about forgiveness, my religion and my God with new insight thanks to Wiesenthal's encounter with a German solider."
"This book deals with one episode from the life of this extraordinary man and poses the question, can or should a person victimized in the holocaust give forgiveness to an SS man on his deathbed for a horrendous deed he did in the holocaust? Wiesenthal tells the story of this episode in his life, then many people from different viewpoints discuss the issue of forgiveness and issues of the holocaust. Excellent for class discussion or reading groups. A good book to challenge readers to think out their moral stances."
"This book will test the meaning of forgiveness. I found the book to be thought provoking, and while I could not appreciate the magnitude of being asked to forgive on behalf of millions, I could understand the desperate search of self regarding the decision.
The book made me contemplative, and I found myself thinking about it long after I finished the last page. This would be a fantastic discussion book for a book club or group. There are numerous passages that could be marked as evidence of contradictory beliefs.
Due to the content, this is not a light read, but it is well worth the time."
