"I remembered reading this in my Women in Literature course in college, but I really couldn't remember what it was about. The only part I recalled was a scene in which a character helps her baby's constipation problem by releasing his bowels with her own finger. I guess the visual description left an impression on me. It really had nothing to do with the main character, Sula, it was just a back story that led up to the development of her character.
Basically, Sula and Nel are best friends. They come from two totally different families, but they find that they are one in the same when they are together. They move through life together, and when Sula leaves for ten years, Nel moves on with her life. When Sula returns, they expect to move on with their lives as they were, but their miscommunication on a particular subject creates a chasm in their relationship.
Morrison continues to write in a way that makes the reader look at bad things (i.e. Sula's mom sleeps around with all the men, even married men) and makes them seem okay from their perspectives (they women were okay with it because then they were proud that they were married to a man attractive enough to make Sula's mom happy). Some disturbing actions take place, and while I stated that I only liked it, it was hard to put down because I wanted to see what would happen next (much like _The Bluest Eye_) or how two stories related to each other."
"Meet Sula and Nel, two best friends with very different lives. Each want to be like the other and each envies the other. As they grow, distinguishes are made and differentiations clear. They are no longer one; they are no longer the best of friends, but the worst of enemies. A betrayal finally draws them apart, and death seals the deal Toni Morrison's powerful novel Sula enacts a friendship that can, at anytime, go wrong because it was formed on a bad foundation, and for bad reasons. As Morrison takes the reader through poverty and racism, he or she is also taken through the emotions of the characters, all of which are original and unforgettable. Morrison is masterful in making the reader feel the shock of walking in on his or her bestfriend sleeping with their husband; and in making them feel the adrenaline one gets when seeing one's daughter caught on fire and burning right before one's eyes. Sula is definitely a good read and anyone looking for a good drama should read this inspiring novel; it's good for the heart AND the head."
"Sula is an interesting novel written by Tony Morrision. It takes place in a place called "The Bottom" during the 1920's. The area itself is where low classed people live. This book is about dispair, lonliness, deception, and sex. The two main characters Sula and her best friend Nel live in the Bottom. The mainly describes their differences between them and what the other lacks or carries that the other longs for. Nel comes from a loving family, where they have a nice house and things. In contrast Sula comes form a family, who isnt kept together in closeness and more distant. Tony Morrison describes the behaviors between the two girls. The diferences between the girls' make them parts ways in the middle of the book going down a bad road where they have no one really. With Sula having sex with Nel's husband the relationship they had ended off as a good one. The book ends off with them being friends by ech others side, with Sula dying and Nel being a great friend by going to the store for her friend. THis is a great store that reflects upon striong friendship that shouldn't be let go by little petty things."
"The novel Sula by Toni Morrison was a very interesting book. It depicted the life of two young girls that were inseparable by nature. They lived in a town in which their actions were centric to the people. The novel described the girls with amazing figurative language. Sula was the most promiscuous and Nel the more self cautious one. In the beginning of the Novel, Sula and Nel spent their hours together but as the years passed Nel settled down with her husband. In response to Nel's marriage Sula left her side for ten years. Sula's reappearance altered everything in the town and Sula tested Nel's marriage. Nel's husband's infidelity with Sula caused the walls of the two women to shatter. No longer were they both the same in each others eyes. The novel caught my interest because of the awful events that both girls experienced. My favorite character was Sula because she received what she wanted in life and she stood as an icon to the town of Bottom. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about friendship struggles and morals."
