"Zizek goes all over the place, ropily tying together all manner of political speculation and off the cuff psychoanalyis. However, he is very good in his particulars and has a consummate grasp of the great thinkers of the modern age. He proposes things like making Palestine a home for all displaced peoples, which is fine, except he requires that they also give up their religions--which is also fine, in principle but, uh, try telling that to--well, you fill in the rest.
Ideology for Zizek is something that is constantly spat out, in contradistinction with Hegel, for whom it is all subsumed, refined, and processed into knowledge which, for the former, is solid as a Slovenian sausage and as unsavory in its mode of production. For him, there is no sublime except in the twilight of life's contradictions, where Heidegger's concepts of being and time are turned on their heads like salt and pepper shakers.
Again, as we read, we are startled by the philospher's itemized insights as much as we are baffled by the way he waffles between abhorring and embracing popular culture (there is frequent recourse to Hollywood film synopsis), and between expostulating and identifying with advocates of liberal democracy. In all, the book is like an old roller coaster beefed up with modern metallurgy, and wanting more of that; but at its best down the deep dips where the wood shakes."
"Chapter 2 was cool -- bits of Lacanian garble that I struggled to make sense of, but I loved the literary and real-world examples Zizek uses to make his points: Pride & Prejudice, Sci-Fi, Julius Caesar, the Titanic, et al. After I finished this reading I dreamt that I time-traveled into the future, which is to say it had an impact on me.
I like the idea that acceptance and necessity (change?) comes about through mis-recognition. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars...."
"i don't know what to say about this book. it has an aesthetic grace to it, but the lacanian thesis is typically outrageous and, ultimately, what we get is just more theoretical drivel mucking up the literary landscape."
"Much more valuable for teeing up questions and concepts than for Zizek's analysis of them. Zizek is committed to Lacan's system, and will analyze all problems and prior thinkers through Lacanian categories, which gets tiresome if you're not a true believer. Nonetheless, Zizek's greatest strength is connecting up thoughts and problems to entertaining examples, which make the problems much more vivid. The prevelance of the "jew joke" as an example, though they all work very well, does make me glad I did not grown up in slovenia."
