"Awesome little book! Easy read. Very informative! It goes over the resources used in making a specific product (e.g. a t-shirt, a hamburger, a newspaper, coffee, cars, etc), using it, and disposing of it. The information is presented in a fun, easy-to-read manner. I've assigned this as a textbook in a lot of my classes. Students really love it!"
"This tiny book makes for a fun read for anyone who wonders where the things we use and consume everyday come from. The authors trace each ingredient in every item they come into contact with on an average day. For instance, the origins of the shirt worn on a regular day to work are traced backwards. So are the materials that compiled make a bicycle; the meat in the hamburger eaten for lunch, along with the bread, the tomato, the cheese in it, and the fries it came with; the plastic and copper that are key components to the computers they use at work; and many other materials still. All of these things are traced to their makers and to the regions of the Earth where they were extracted from. This book raises consumers' awareness of where their possessions come from and what the environmental costs are to producers and consumers. The book is a less depressing read than it might seem at first blush because it also attempts to offer ways for consumers to lessen their "carbon footprints". The suggestions offered, however, are sort of standard suggestions rather than very innovative ones (like riding bikes to work rather than driving, or eating less meat and more vegetables) that fail to get at the heart of the real problem of unbridled consumption. The things suggested at least are a place to start and the book is written for the mainstream, so hopefully it is positioned to reach more people than your average academic text."
