About this title: One of the motivating questions in materials research today is, how can elements be combined to produce a solid with specified properties? This book is intended to acquaint the reader with established principles of crystallography and cohesive forces that are needed to address the fundamental relationship between the composition, structure and bonding. Starting with an introduction to periodic trends, the book discusses crystal structures and the various primary and secondary bonding types, and finishes by describing a number of models for predicting phase stability and structure. Containing ...

"This book written by Rohrer is one with clear description and illustration. It helped me a lot to understand the complex physical models of various kinds of chemical bondings as well as the x-ray diffraction. The physical picture introduced in this book is systematic and complete. With practical problems, the book is easy to understand and effective in practice. But the portion about space groups is not well written and the occasional mistakes in the book really sucks me. So if you wanna master the most essence and applicable part of diffraction and bonding theory, you should choose it instead of reading large piles of other classical ones like Pauling or Cullity."
