About this title: Strega Nona is a good and kindhearted "grandmother witch" who provides cures and magical potions for all the people in her small Italian village of Calabria. As she grows older, Strega Nona decides that she needs a helper, and so she hires Big Anthony, a sweet, but rather dim, young man. At first, Big Anthony is a wonderful helper, but when he spies Strega Nona using her magical pasta pot, which instantly cooks up tasty pasta for the good witch's dinner, he decides that he, too, should be able to perform such magic. Although Strega Nona warns him to never touch her pasta pot, Big Anthony is ...

""Bubble, bubble pasta pot, make me some pasta nice and hot." Great balance of story and magic for young children. My preschoolers LOVED it! Also a good lesson in obedience/following directions. You'll have to read for yourself to see what happens when Big Anthony doesn't follow directions."
"I cannot believe I went through preschool and 6 years of grade school and no teacher ever read this aloud to me! It is a great children's book, complete with classic storytelling techniques, humor, and a simple, but important moral (For children: listen and follow instructions; and perhaps for adults: Don't disobey your boss!). I can't wait to read the others in dePaola's Strega Nona series. The story is great, and the illustrations are fantastic (clearly, as it is a Caldecott Honor book!). I can't wait to add this to my classroom library when I am a teacher someday soon!"
"Strega Nona, or Grandma Witch, cures headaches, finds husbands, and removes warts, but she's gettingon in years and needs hellp. An add in the village leads her to hire Big Anthony, who works hard, but doesn't listen very well. Her only rule? Do not touch the pasta pot. Of course, Anthony doesn't listen very well and a pasta-filled incident ensues/lesson-learning incident ensues."
"This book reminded me alot of the stories that I used to hear growing up. The idea of the feared, misunderstood, but respected humble woman who could do magical things for people seems to be common in a lot of European tales. I find the lessons in these stories to be very morally tied. In this story the lesson is not to be sneaky and curious, and to listen to your elders when they tell you not to do something. It also shows the (rather comical) consequences for not following directions. I liked Tomie dePaola's illustrations in this book because they really brought the story to life. The color and style give the book an antiquated look, which really work well for this story."
