"I think this may be a rare occassion of the film being better than the book it is based on.
I love the film so I'm slightly gutted that I disliked the book so much. I think that the problem with the book is that it was over-complicated, whereas the film is fairly straight forward, even though it contains a pretty elaborate murder plot (or plots).
The book is quite short so give it a go if you are interested and used to sticking out slow-going books."
"File this one under: The Books ISN'T Always Better Than the Movie. Though in some ways more "uncompromising" than the Hitchcock film, it is also more "meandering" and "boring." Hitchcock tightened the action, made the characters more interesting and their motivations more clear. Also **spoiler** despite the fact that Guy ends up killing Bruno's father in the book, where Hitchcock goes for the more "Hollywood" ending of having him avoid it, in some ways, Hitchcock's Guy is MORE unsympathetic, in the way that he just drips with entitlement and snobbery, where Highsmith's Guy is tortured by Bruno to the point that she attempts at least to excuse him for the murder."
"I was reading this book while on holiday and then when stopped in a hotel in Montreal, Hitchcock's version showed up (in French) on morning television. I had seen the movie years ago, so it was kinda neat to see the characters I was reading about on screen while they were so fresh in my head. While reading I kept thinking, "Guy, stop this madness!" (which I always think of the good guys drawn into the web of evil while watching film noirs). This book is as it should be. Pretty thrilling ride."
"I actually picked this book up on a whim, when I was browsing in the library. Had never heard of Patricia Highsmith before. I was surprised with this book though, she has a great ability to build interest in characters. How she depicted Bruno often made me uneasy, thinking about what a weird guy he was. Very good book, and I'll defintely be reading more of her work."
