About this title: The story of Eric Hansen's astonishing 2,400 walk across Borneo, the third largest island in the world, and back again. Some of the area he covered is still marked "unknown" on modern maps. His account includes details of his contact with the Penan people, a shy tribe of forest nomads.

"You don't find many current travel writers heading off to the tropical rain forest of Borneo. I'm still not really sure why Hansen headed there. He seemed to like this place, despite deadly snakes, really inadequate toilet facilities, awful food (he mentions eating rotten fish many times), and scary tribal people. Maybe you gotta be there."
"I like books that can insert into the readers mind a way of thinking that is utterly foreign. The forest dwellers, viewed by westerners, are so utterly clueless, yet, this traveler sets ripples in motion in the forest that announce his presence to all the inhabitants. Their measure of 'distance' from one location to another, is actually measured in days. Beyond a few hundred yards, our notion of distance is unfathomable to them. There are no straight lines or predictable rates of travel in their forest. I wish I had the guts to have made such a trip-- I wouldn't be tempted now-- dont like the leaches and mosquitoes and snakes."
"If I could only recommend three books to an armchair traveller/adventurer, they would be "Endurance", "Into Thin Air", and Eric Hansen's "Stranger in the Forest". Borneo is one of the planet's last unexplored mysteries, and this book is full of fascinating people, flora, and fauna. I haven't been lucky enough to do much travelling in my life, but books like this help fill that void."
