"Fascinating. I had some trouble sitting still for the first 5-10 pages, but after that, I really couldn't put it down (and it's a book for school! imagine that!). Race relations in the United States after the civil war are much more complex and confused than most people know. It isn't surprising, but once you really sift through the details, the late 1800s- the early 1900s is a world about which you've never heard.
** For added effect, read the entire book on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the eve of the inauguration of our first African American President... that's what I did!"
"A strange kind of book that straddles the line of being both a secondary and primary historical source. Because of this, it makes it hard to judge it as either. However, it is a must-read for anyone interested in race relations."
"A classic--one of those books that you keep hearing about if you've ever done anything with African American history. Of course, the interesting thing about reading a classic decades after it was published is that the "new" ideas are no longer new. I had to keep reminding myself that this was groundbreaking stuff in context, rather than telling me things I already knew. But I felt like I should read it and now I have."
