"We got this book at a yard sale on a whim. I'm surprised at how enjoyable it was to read! It was VERY uplifting and I'm also surprised at how closely the movie The Sound of Music followed the corresponding parts of the book. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoyed the movie (read: everyone). And I've since learned that Maria and a daughter and granddaughter make a cameo in the movie...guess what I'll be watching tonight!"
"I had been looking for the story behind the von Trapp family, and when I found this book at a booksale I snatched it up. It is such an uplifting and beautiful story, in spite of the many trials the family endured. It was fascinating to see the similarities and contrasts with the movie, The Sound of Music. Maria really was as optimistic as she was in the movie, and I was especially glad it was she who wrote this. However, I wish she had written more about her life before she joined the abbey. While she mentions youth groups she belonged to, there is no mention of her parents or upbringing. I wish the book had photos. Even the cover is just a rough sketch of the family. The edition I have is from 1957, so I had to do a little online research to find out what happened with the family after the book was written. The cultural differences Maria encounters when they first move to America are hilarious. It is a wonderful story of a loving family, and I really enjoyed it."
"This book brought to life all the best bits of the film "The Sound of Music" whilst removing the added for film aspects, for instance the Baron was not a hard unloving character and although the Princess told Maria that the Baron was in love with her it was not done in a nasty way like it was in the film by the Baroness.
It was great to read all about the family's life in America especially the amusing stories of Maria learning to speak English. As you read more and more it is hard not to get the feeling that this would be a very good family to belong to.
The family achieved so much, their Singing is just one part of all they accomplished. I hope the essence of what Georg and Maria began has continued within the family even if the singing has not. This is ultimately a family who are their for each other and support each other through thick and thin, very rear in the modern world.
This was a book I truly found difficult to put down."
