"Interesting. A very idiosyncratic, 1920's, children's, history book. Told from a very "1920's schoolmaster" point of view (racist, sexist, euro-centric, but good natured and constantly self-referential). Mildly offensive in it's POV, but otherwise an interesting grounding in history."
"This is a great big picture view of the history of the world. Very interesting. Perceptive. Helped fill in a bunch of holes I had lurking around the dark ages.
I didn't read the complete book, but for my purposes I finished it."
"I read an original 1921 printing of this book and the obvious "great white man" viewpoint of the author/narrator would be very comical (from a 21st century standpoint) if the author/narrator weren't so darned serious. This kicked off my Newbery project (attempt to read all the Newbery Medal awardees ever), after which I realized that I wasn't going to tolerate that viewpoint for very long if I read them all straight through in order from the very beginning of the Newbery Medals. So I'm going to skip around."
"I saved the worst for last. My final Newbery and what a struggle it was to get through it! This is the story of the history of the world through the ages, written for a young audience. It is said to have been amended and updated and added to, but, if that is so, I can only shudder to think of the awful book that this book was originally. It is, in its present form, chock full of cruel opinions and mean asides about various peoples and their actions through the ages. I had considered keeping this book for my library, but, having read it, I cannot do it."
