About this title: First published in 1936, THE STORY OF FERDINAND was seen by some as an allegory, however what it is an allegory about is up to interpretation. Some see it as a reflection on the Spanish Civil War, others think it is about Nazism, while still others see it as a commentary on Communism. The book was banned in Spain and called "degenerate democratic propaganda" by Adolf Hitler. In the United States, the story was seen not only as Communist, but also as anarchist and fascist--although it ultimately became 1938's number one bestseller. Unlike most of the other bulls in Spain, Ferdinand does not ...

"This is one of my all-time-fave books that I realized I hadn't put on my list of books! I memorized it in 4th grade when we were given an assignment to memorize a favorite book to read aloud to kindergarten students and I still love the phrase "liked to sit just quietly and smell the flowers." I think it describes my philosophy in life, really, and I just love Ferdinand. Now when I read the book, I can hear my mom's voice in my head - which is an awesome thing! I also remember - fondly - a moment in church (I even remember that it was 1991!) and I was sitting behind a girl who had her nose pierced with a ring through it - right through the center. And this little girl sitting on the pew near me who had red curly hair and a piping, carrying voice turned to her mom, and, pointing at the girl with the nose piercing, asked her mom, "Mommy, is that girl Ferdinand?" I wanted to steal that little girl and keep her forever! :)"
"I had a book birthday party for my daughter where I asked everyone to get her a book instead of toys. Well, one of my friends gave her this book. I had remembered it from when I was younger but I didn't care for it too much. I read it to Lucy, who didn't seem to care much about it one or the other, and the I decided that it was a great book. It's a story a big, stong bull, who looks like all the others except he is different, he dosent like to fight, instead he would rather sit in the shade and smell flowers."
"I really love the story of Ferdinand, he is a sweet bull who loves to sit in the shade under a cork tree and smell the flowers. While all the other bulls are trying to show their strength and how fierce they are, so they can get picked to go to the bull fights in Madrid, Ferdinand just wants to sit alone in the shade under the tree. :0) On the day then Men come to pick the fiercest bull, poor unlucky Ferdinand sits on a bee and gets stung. He jumps up stomping and running and the Men think he's the strongest fiercest bull they have ever seen and take him off to Madrid, to the bull fight.
The children in my class love this story and always have tons of questions about the bull fights and what happens there."
