About this title: A 14-year-old boy named Alex Rider is shocked to discover that his recently deceased Uncle Ian was not, as he claimed to be, the vice-president of a bank but rather a spy for the British government. Now the government has called on Alex to complete his uncle's last mission--the investigation of Sayle Enterprises. Could the head of Sayle Enterprise, a company creating a super computer, be responsible for the murder of Alex's uncle? This is the first in a series of books to feature teenage spy Alex Rider

"I read this book for a book club hosted at one of the schools that my library serves.
I was expecting more from the book as it was/is so popular with younger boys and this first book spawned a whole series as well as a movie (though I do know that the movie bombed).
I just found the book to be boring and predictable. It was hard for the group to come up with something to discuss during our meetings because the book is totally plot driven. There's not much wrong with being a plot driven thriller, but that doesn't really work well for discussion.
The other big problem I had with the book is that the main character seems so emotionless. Anyone -- teen or adult -- should have an emotional response when they find out that the only adult in their life has died mysteriously. Alex Rider seems more interested in finding out why his uncle didn't buckle his seat belt than he is in having a real emotion. For that reason, I find it hard to cling to anything real in the book. If I can't care for the main character, do I really worry when he's in jeopardy? Not really. Because I know that when we're this divorced from reality there is no chance of Rider pulling off his James Bond stunts with nary a scratch."
"Alex Rider, an average 14 year old London School boy finds himself thrown into the world on MI6 (the British version of the CIA). The best thing about this series is that it is very unbelievable. The things Alex does to single handedly save the world are so far above belief that you can just sit back and enjoy the far fetched story line. My 6th grader read the series and enjoyed them only because she was able to discern that they are unrealistic. otherwise I think they may have scared her. The death scenes are graphic with lots of violence and there is some mild bad language in each book but the storyline does draw you in and keep your attention. The gadgets are by far the best part of the book as they are geared more towards diversions, than death. (They will not give Alex any weapons) Overall a good adventure series but I would not let your young children read this series unless you have read it first. As with other series, this one gets more intense as you go. The seventh book is by far more violent and graphic than the first."
"This book was about a kid named Alex Rider, 16 years old and he had to find the person who killed his uncle. The book takes place in England. Alexs parents died in a plane crash so the only person he had left in his family was basicly his uncle and he died. Alex gets kidnapped by a secret british intelligents agency that Alex finds out that his uncle worked for and they offer him a chance to work with them and find out the merderer of his uncle. Alexs main external conflict is that his parents died and his uncle to so he basiclly had no one in his family. Then he got taken in by some strangers he doesnt even know to work with them. Alex had a tough life in the story. This book was a great book i would give it a 5 out of 5. It had action a great story and mystery to it to. I would definetly recommend this book to everyone who likes a lot of action in a book."
"I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this book.
I chose to read (listen) to this book because I am trying to be current with what the kids in the library are reading so I can discuss books with them or reommend titles to them. I found myself being really drawn into the plot of the book.
Clearly aimed at the male segment of the population with detailed info on the vehicles that made me smile. I am a girl and "silver BMW" is sufficient, but this book tells the specific model, how many liters, V's etc. My son assures me that this is a "guy thing". I just ignored all the car talk that made no sense to me and enjoyed the story.
It is fast paced and exciting, with a lot of adventure. A total thrill ride for kid and a total "beach book" for parents.
I'm not sure if my edition selection indicates that this I listened to the audio version, but this is an excellent choice for a book to listen to on a family road trip."
