"This tale is based on folk tales past down over time. It's about a traveler visiting a starving town, presumably in wartime, and teaching them to pull together. The traveler claims to be magical and creates soup by requesting items from the towns people. This story has been re-told for ages, but Marcia's version is well illustrated and has a great tone."
"The soldiers came to the village. It was old times. My favorite part was when they were creating the soup. The put in carrots, stones, salt, cabbage, meat, water, and milk.
The main characters were soldiers. There were also peasants."
"I read this book when teaching a third grade class. This book was so rich that I was able to teach several lessons. First, I read several different versions of Stone Soup, and the students created Venn diagrams depicting the similarities and differences of each story. Then, as a whole group we discussed the morals of each story and focused on sharing and what that means in both Stone Soup and within our classroom. The students also learned to "make" stone soup, which included reading a recipe and measuring ingredients. The students loved this story!"
"I use this book as my management style. You may be saying, "huh?" Read it and you will see. In an age when organizations are being destroyed by their silos, this shows a fun way to get everyone together."
