About this title: In this riveting diary, an 11-year-old girl reveals her downward spiral into anorexia nervosa. She also notes her father's authoritative attitude and her mother's unhealthy relationship with food. This horrifying account illuminates the ways in a culture's obsession with perfection, dieting, and body image, combined with an unhappy family life, can ruin a child.

"Read as a consideration for a new non-fiction lit circle book for my 8th graders. About an 11 year old with anorexia...it was okay. Not particulary engaging for me. I don't know how my 8th graders would feel about it - especially the boys."
"Intentionally or not, Lori Gottlieb trivializes anorexia with this (obviously doctored) diary of her childhood. Her miraculous recovery based on a decision to 'snap out of it' is what fuels the misguided belief that eating disorders are a choice. This book needs to be pulled from the shelves."
"As a teen growing up in Beverly Hills, California, Lori was surrounded by women, including her own mother, who were very conscious of their weight. At eleven years old, Lori then gets it in her head that she is fat and must stop eating to get skinny like a stick figure. This book is based on diaries Lori kept as a preteen. She experiences anorexia nervosa. It gets so bad, her parents send her to therapy and eventually the therapist puts her in the hospital. Her obsession and need to control her weight get out of hand and affect her mental and physical health. There is a lot of humor as the story is told from the viewpoint of a child. But it is sad too to think about the pressures society puts on women to be thin."
"Meh. I read is based on a recommendation from a friend. I knew the premise, but as I was reading I couldn't help but think it must have been doctored from her original diaries. No 11 year old writes that much that coherently, even if she does score well on IQ tests. Something about the portrayal of her recovery didn't sit well with me, either."
