About this title: Entrenched on a poorly sheltered island, many of Seamus Donegan's crack squad of Army scouts lie dead - and many more are dying. Led by Colonel George Forsythe, fifty seasoned plainsmen have combed the Colorado Territory in search of Cheyenne. Along a fork of the Republican River, these brave men suddenly find themselves outnumbered twenty to one. Now Donegan, his fellow scouts and his long-lost uncle are trapped - and under attack. "Terry C. Johnston proves his writing talents in The Stalkers: The Battle of Beecher Island, 1868 (the third book in Johnston's Plainsmen series.) As in the preceding two books (Sioux Dawn and Red Cloud's Revenge, also excellent books) Johnston uses his fictional protagonist Seamus Donegan to provide a supsenseful, intriguing, exciting and educational look at the events of the settling of the American West. In The Stalker's, Seamus Donengan finds himself (along with his long lost but now found Uncle Liam O' Roarke) trapped on a small island by vast numbers of Cheyenne warriors. Throughout the book, Johnston alternates between action filled sequences of battle and well written dialogue that offers an interesting perspective on what sort of emotions and thoughts might have been experienced by soldiers pioneering the American West. Aside from the thorough presentation of frontier history trough the eyes of American soldiers and civilians, Johnston also offers in alternating chapters perspective through the eyes of the Native Americans of his books (again, Johnston deals with actual historical figures and events as witnessed through the eyes of a fictional character.) So all in all, this book is another excellent installment in Terry Johnston's Plainsmen series that offers an educational and exciting read that I would strongly recommend for history buffs, western fans, or anybody looking for a great read."
