About this title: How to make a memorable garden in a small space, and do it with a minimum of the backbreaking labor usually associated with a really superior garden: that's the author's message, which he presents on his PBS series and distills in this useful book--a perennial best-seller.

"This book is an excellent reference for beginning to garden in a small space using the square foot method. The reference section at the end describing many common crops and how and when to plant them is especially useful. However, a lot of the book comes across sounding like an infomercial for his method... and if a person doesn't follow it exactly then he can't call it square foot gardening. As long as I skimmed through the sections that overflowed with his own praise and condemned anyone who plants "the old way", I was able to glean a lot of useful information to help me in my gardening endeavors. For what it is worth, I am sold on his method, but the preachiness of the writing style was a bit off-putting."
"I love Mel! I've been gardening using his old book (circa 1985-ish?) for several years, and I thought I knew what love was when I discovered that treasure. Then I picked up his ALL NEW SFG book and was thrilled at how Mel took a simple system and made it even simpler! The book's step-by-step, full-color-photograph-illustrated instructions for every single part of the gardening process are invaluable. And so clear that I truly believe anyone, literally anyone, could garden with this book as a guide. I'm beginning to think I could even start composting, which I've been putting off for years due to the intimidation factor.
The guide to specific fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs is expanded in both breadth and depth and is particularly helpful. I'm impressed with his efforts to educate citizens of Third World countries in this method so they can better provide for their families. And his Square Yard in the School Yard program is exciting, too.
Seriously. This book has changed not only the way I garden, but how I eat because my garden actually produces lots of food! I've lent my old book to several others to get them started on SFG and they've loved it, too."
"Mel's method (revised) for gardening successively in smaller spaces. I mean, you can have big expanses of SFG, but the planting is more precise and the yield is higher. Gone are rows of monocrops we envision in gardens. In a Square Foot Garden, 12" grids reign supreme. There are a lot of rules & structure in SFG- how many plants per space, the exact formula for the soil, etc. I, personally, am not disciplined enough to follow a gardening methodology like this, but I think it's a great idea if someone is new to gardening. SFG provides a lot of structure & support, basically setting you up for success. I am sure SFG is wonderful, fulfilling and satisfying. I maintain a higher order of chaos in my garden, but I think the principle is sound."
"This looks like a great way to garden! I don't think I will use all of the techniques, but I want to incorporate a lot of them into my gardening this year. I signed up for a community garden plot and I am going to try to square-foot-garden it. The drawback is that I can't use Mel's Mix because the soil has already been placed in the plot, but it is a raised bed. All I have to do is incorporate some of the ingredients of Mel's Mix, work it in, set up the grid, and start planting. I think that will be close enough. At home in my backyard, I might try to set up some real SFGs and use all of the suggestions in the book. If you garden, I recommend this book. UPDATE- I have been Square Foot Gardening in my community garden plot for several weeks now. I'm getting lots of compliments on the garden and I'm having lots of success with the veggies and herbs!"
