"Un italiano-americano importanti nella seconda guerra mondiale vince l'amore e l'ammirazione degli abitanti locali, quando si cerca un sostituto per l'anno di 700 città vecchia campana fusa per proiettili dai fascisti."
"Post-invasion Italy required American administrators in Italian towns. Victor Joppolo was one of those administrators. He wanted to teach the Italian people about democracy and he operated in the best interest of the people of Adano. In this capacity he ran afoul of General Mitchell (thinly vailed character of Gen. Patton). Readers will enjoy Major Joppolo's humanity and endure the military heirarchical thinking. I enjoyed this book and recommend it as a light read regarding WW II."
"A quaint book that intersperses the comic with the tragic well enough to make you believe that the author was an excellent observer of all things human -- he was a war correspondent at the time of the book's publication, in any case. Has the book dated since 1943? I think not. Hersey's characters can be inserted into any tale at any time and play the same eternal roles."
