Maria Edgeworth, best known for the Gothic classic Castle Rackrent: An Hibernian Tale (1800), was born on New Year's Day 1767, the second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, in her paternal grandfather Mr. Eler's home in Black Bourtan, Longford. "Another darling book from one of Jane Austen's contemporaries...I enjoyed it thoroughly even though it took a little effort to get into it at first. It is a great book to turn to when you run out of Jane Austen novels to read."
"Maria Edgeworth was more or less a contemporary of Jane Austen, but you can tell by this novel, she wasn't a sheltered preacher's daughter. Jane Austen alludes to the debauched lives of Wickham and Willoughby, but you don't see them from the inside. Belinda does show you that world; she is the houseguest of Lady Delacour in London, who lives in luxury and decadence. Belinda's great strength is that she is not adversely influenced by her hostess. If anything, she is the trigger to Lady Delacour's redemption.
Overall, though, I don't agree with the author's message. She seems to be saying that it is greater to live around sin and be impervious to it, like Belinda, rather than to live a more conservative and sheltered life. We see this from one happily married, provinical sort of character who gives Belinda bad love advice and even more so in the character that is Belinda's rival of sorts, a young girl raised in near-isolation. That character, how she got there, and the way the author resolves her out of the story is what really got my goat in this book. The whole thing made the male lead seem like a real jerk, and it wasn't believable anyway.
A college student writing a paper on pre- or early feminist portrayals of women could find plenty of material in this book, but as for literary romance, I'll take Austen or Bronte over Edgeworth every time."
"A delightful story of a beautiful and refreshingly rational and intelligent young lady (wouldn't mind a few more of those!) who learns from the mistakes of those around her, Belinda had me burning the midnight oil from beginning to end. There are characters aplenty - a scheming and mercenary aunt, a captivating, middle-aged bon vivant with a sad secret and a crumbling marriage, servants faithful and faithless, a few harpies, and not one but two handsome suitors - and smack in the middle of it all, Belinda - smart, well-read, and very aware of the craziness around her. This is a very briskly-paced, very funny novel, with lots of talk, certainly, but plenty of action at every turn. Clarence Hervey must be one of the most unusual and intriguing heroes I have come across in a novel from this period (could you see Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy dressing up in a hoopskirt to make a point?). I'm sure that there are a lot of very academic things I could say about this novel - its treatment of race relations in an England that had not yet abolished the slave trade, its commentary on women making their own marriage choices - but that's not why I enjoyed it. It's a great story on its own."
