"I'm glad I read this book later rather than sooner. I probably would've deemed it depressing and not really thought about what the message of the story was. Most of the book is done during school so you get a real sense of what high school is really like. I know sometimes I thought "Yes I KNOW!". In spite of Melinda being so clouded about everything, I like her. She has character and is very sarcastic. She is completely normal, except for the fact that she has a secret that keeps her from talking. I couldn't help feeling bad for her, but in the end she pulls through. And I was actually proud of her."
"If I could give it a 4 and a half I would. It was VERY good especially towards the end. There was some good messages, jokes and sarcasm. But I can't give it a 5 because, although I finished it in 2 days, it's the kind of mopey book you might not be in the mood for, although I was, and sometimes it was hard to read, like to repetitive. It was a great idea for a story and pretty good relation to teenagers by the author. Also, it was kind of slow towards the middles before things start to change and it's pretty easy to figure out what happened at the party. I figured out almost in the very beginning like first 10 pages.
The ending was phonomenal and I really like Mr. Freeman and the whole art project idea. I also liked how her "room" turned out so important and really had the book pick up the pace in the end.
"Just before the start of her freshman year, Melinda attended a party and ended up having to call the police. The police showed up, broke up the party and everyone there is mad at Melinda. She becomes an outcast, retreating into herself and becoming a shadow of her former self. The only connection she feels to the outside world is in her art class, where she's given the year-long project of creating art work around the theme of trees.
Of course, it's easy to figure out early on that something more happened at the party to Malinda. And while the seeds are sewn early on as to what is could be, it doesn't take away any of the impact when what happened to Malinda that fateful night is finally revealed. In fact, it makes it that much more horrifying as we've just spent so much time inside Melinda's head, seeing how it's eaten her up, made her withdraw from family and friends and left her a virtual outcast in her new high school.
"Speak" is a mature novel intended for teenage readers. The first-person perspective of Melinda is a fascinating one."
"I'm not really the one for all that real-life junk, but this book was good! I wasn't really thrilled when I heard I had to read it, thanks to my class. I will automatically hate any book that I am forced to read, that's a given. But the more I read, the harder it was to stop. I wanted to know who IT was and also I'm into art just like her. I was really freaked out by the book in fact. Because I started to remember this movie from a long time ago, I didn't even realize I could remember that far back. But while I was reading, these parts would come up like in the movie. And then the closet and I was positive I'd seen the movie to this book, but I couldn't remember what happened in the movie until I read that part in the book. Finally, a couple days after I finished reading the book someone at my lunch table told me it did have a movie to go with the book. Thank goodness, I thought I was finally going insane. Anyways, some of the people in that book are so AHH! Heather only came around Melinda when she needed help with something. Didn't even stand up for Melinda's drawings! Then totally ditched her! And then even has the nerve to come and ask her for help! WHAT A FAKE JERK! WAH! Anyways, I do wonder if that IT guy also did it to someone else. Did he get alot of years in prison or what? Something I wish I knew the answer to. I also wonder if she had to take summer school, or did she pass? I wonder if that Mr. Neck guy will finally start treating her better? I wish I got more answers, but all in all it's not a bad book!"
