"Pink is nothing if not thorough and meticulous in his use and understanding of Scripture. He does a good job at going very in depth into breaking down how God is sovereign in general areas and explaining, along with Scriptural support, into what God's sovereignty in those areas means and how it can be proven. I was especially impressed by the appendix on John 3:16, as this verse was one of the many sticking points for me before I accepted Reformed tradition.
On the down side, Pink can tend to be very dry in his writing style, and I personally don't care for his narrative voice (although that's more of a personal preference than a general review). There were also times when Pink would raise an extremely insightful question, but then dance around answering it, add some Scripture and then never really answer what he had originally posed. Also, while there is tons of Scripture and it is often used for strong effect, he rarely uses more than a single verse, often just a part of a verse, and you have to wonder if the way he is using it to support his claims takes the verse out of a context that wasn't really meant to say what Pink thinks it does."
"We can't believe in a deus ex-machina says Pink, and rightly so. But, if we can make a special distinction here, he also conflates agency (the exercise of power) with potency (the possession of power). Does my ability to either 1) go drive my car into a crowd of people or 2) volunteer for Habitat for Humanity really limit the omnipotence of God? I may either act out mercy or create more situations where mercy can come in and heal wrongs, and this does indeed glorify God either way, but God doesn't force me to make the wrong choice in order to bring this glory forth. Such a god would be a monstrosity!
"This is probably the best book I've read so far presenting high calvanist theology. Being not-Calvinist, it gave me a good understanding of why someone might be Calvinist, and I think this will help to illuminate future dialogue..."
"My husband has loved this book for over 30 years and given many copies away. I was so happy I could get him an early edition, old hardcover that we will keep forever. It has brought us much comfort and increased our faith and helped us share God's sovereignty with others."
