"This was cleary one of her first books. I actually enjoyed seeing everyone's points of view played out and I didn't mind knowing the ending at the beginning, it just intrigued me to get to know the character more. However, I definitely have a few issues with the book in terms of the relationships between the characters and the especially the ending.
Seriously, does Jane think that Oliver is a true changed man? When given the chance, he chooses his work over his family, and yes he eventually does the tv thing but that doesn't change the fact that he did not hesitate to pick his work first when given the chance. Which of course begs the question, did she just waste the trip to Mass? I also don't understand why she chose to go back to him. "He is always inside of me." um, no lady he won't. Maybe if the ending had been different or maybe if Jodi P. had made the character of Oliver more likeable instead of the self-centered scientist with an ego the size of Texas, I might have given this book a higer rating. Of course, we are talking about Jodi Picoult and her books aren't really known for their happiness and sunshine.
Overall I liked the book but it does make you wonder, why wasn't she allowed to have more than her 'five minutes of happniess' ?"
"This is the third novel in a row that I've read about troubled marriages, and I think I better look for a new theme. That's not to say I didn't really enjoy this one, though. Jane, the main character, grew up with an abusive father, and that has made it difficult for her to deal with her own marital problems. After an intense emotional and physical argument with her husband, Oliver, she leaves home with their daughter, Rebecca, and sets off on a cross country journey mapped out by her beloved brother, Joley.
The novel is told by five different characters; so, if this type of narration bothers you, this book is not for you."
"I thought this book was fairly well-written. I liked the concept- story told from 5 different viewpoints- chronologically, with the exception of one story line that started from the end and wove its way backwards. For that reason, there weren't exactly any twists and turns. However, there were two things that made me feel this was just "ok". SPOILER ALERT...
First, I really didn't like the fact that the mother's "journey of self discovery" ultimately ended in an affair. It seems like this is the norm in novels these days, and while maybe I shouldn't fault the author for going with the norm, I actually think it would have made the story more interesting to NOT have the affair. Second, there is a fairly graphic encounter between a 15-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man. It is consensual, and I understand plotwise why it took place. But still- it's a 15-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man."
"I'm a fan of Jodi Picoult, but this novel seemed a bit too predictable and frustrating because of the 5 voices thing. Usually I like it when a novel jumps around in time, but it did not seem to have a point in this book. I think that Picoult succeeds in making the woman who runs away from her husband sympathetic, but the romance she finds with another man is not believable and is honestly a bit weird when her daughter hooks up with a man of the same age. My favorites of hers are My Sister's Keeper and Plain Truth--this one was just not as good."
