"Burroughs, Edgar Rice. THE SON OF TARZAN. (n.d.; this edition 1963). ***. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ballantine Books came out with reprint editions of the Burrough's books in the Tarzan series. I read the first three back then: "Tarzan of the Apes," "The Return of Tarzan," and "The Beasts of Tarzan." The stories got progressively worse as the series went on and I quit. I stumbled upon several more of the series at a library sale and decided I try again. This adventure didn't get any better. In this story, young John Grystoke, Tarzan's son, yearns for the jungles, where his father was raised. A reckless venture brings him to the shores of Africa with Akut the ape, his father's old friend and companion. Akut teaches him the ways of beasts until at last young Greystoke is named Korak the Killer, a fierce and dreaded savage of the jungle - as mighty as his father. During the days of their issue, the Tarzan books were hugely popular boys' books. There were twenty-two of them in all. Plus, there were the movie spin-offs. My favorite was Buster Crabbe as the lead. You read these as a sort of nostalgia, even though it gets painful in spots."
"While this book is definitely of the Tarzan series, it wasn't quite as good as the first three. I did like it, but was hoping for more Tarzan in the book itself. I still think it's a must read for Tarzan fans."
"Tarzan and Jane continue their legacy through their son. Will he survive the jungle or not? Not quite as compelling as the first two books, and yet I have read it at least 5 times! Burroughs writing is so unique that you get stuck on having books that are written with this kind of structure."
